A bald eagle dropping the word 'receiving' into the header "Receiving from God"

This series of studies will look at some of the scriptural principles behind the many different ways we can receive God’s prophetic impartation, and how to respond to what he gives. Subjects covered include: the importance of the heart, hearing the voice of the Lord, impressions, visions, trances, signs and dreams. See the list at the bottom of the page for details.

Introduction

Rick Joyner (Joyner 1999) tells of a story of a man who visited the Middle East. Sitting on a hillside he watched three shepherds approaching a watering hole with their flocks. All three flocks just merged into a single great mass. He was sure it would be impossible for them ever to get the sheep sorted out again. To his amazement, the shepherds seemed completely unconcerned. After the sheep had finished drinking, each shepherd started walking down a different path, singing as he went. The sheep started to move. There seemed to be chaos at first, and then little streams of sheep started following after each shepherd until they had all separated again into their own flocks. Even though each of the shepherds was singing and there was movement in all directions, the sheep could distinguish their own shepherd’s voice from the others. They knew it because they had grown up with him in the hills and pastures. They had heard him speak and sing to them, so they knew whom to follow.

This picture contrasts totally with the western world’s perception of the shepherd aptly illustrated by the cartoon below.

Cartoon of a man standing in a field commanding a flock of sheep to "Graze" and then "Back to the barn" with the caption "He was king of the sheep."

In John 10:3-5 Jesus talks about a shepherd saying “The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and his sheep follow Him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognise a stranger’s voice.”

Jesus identifies himself as the good shepherd in verse 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” In verse 27, He states “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.”

The important thing here is that Jesus calls each sheep by name. During our salvation, God called us individually. Each of us has so far heard his voice, at least in this respect. There are no nameless sheep! The scripture goes on to say that He “leads them out …. He goes ahead of them, and his sheep follow Him….My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.”

Part of what it means to be a Christian is to listen for his voice, and then follow it as He leads. The aim of the following studies is to help us to identify when God is speaking so that we can follow more easily.
