Seeing with the eyes of your heart

Scripture talks about the ‘eyes of the heart’ when referring to spiritual sight.

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.” Eph 1:18

The eyes of the heart are the place in our imagination that we go to inside, when we re-experience memorable events such as holidays and other experiences. One way of accessing them is to picture in your imagination your favourite breakfast. Some will even be able to ‘taste’ the orange juice and croissant, or ‘smell’ the coffee and bacon! Or you can visit in your imagination the holiday destination that you have most enjoyed.

These were the eyes with which Elisha saw Gehazi asking for money and clothes, and then hiding them in 2 Kings 5:26:

“‘Did not my heart go with you when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? Is it a time to receive money and to receive clothes and olive groves and vineyards and sheep and oxen and male and female servants? Therefore, the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your descendants forever.’ So he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.”

The mention of olive groves, vineyards, sheep, oxen, male and female servants are not in Gehazi’s original request. This means that Elisha was able to see in detail the greed within his heart.

These were the spiritual eyes that were opened when Elisha prayed for his new servant in 2 Kings 6:17.

“Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ And the Lord opened the servants’ eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elijah.”
